NCAA Academic Requirements

NCAA Academic Requirements for College Athletes

To be eligible to play college sports at the NCAA level, you must meet certain academic requirements. The NCAA has specific rules about GPA, test scores, and course requirements that vary by division.

What Are the NCAA Academic Requirements?

  • Core Courses: You must complete a specific number of core courses throughout high school. These are classes that the NCAA recognizes as part of the academic curriculum (e.g., English, math, science).

  • GPA Requirements: The NCAA sets a minimum GPA standard that varies by division:

    • Division I: Requires a minimum GPA of 2.3 in core courses for incoming athletes.

    • Division II: Requires a minimum GPA of 2.2.

    • Division III: Does not have specific GPA requirements, but schools will still have academic standards.

  • Test Scores: You’ll also need standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) that meet NCAA criteria.

Why It Matters:

  • Meeting these academic requirements is essential to gaining eligibility for collegiate play.

  • Coaches can only recruit you if you meet both athletic and academic eligibility standards.
