Common Recruiting Myths
Common Recruiting Myths
Navigating the college recruiting process can be overwhelming, and with all the information available, it's easy to get misled. At Country Fire Volleyball, we’re committed to providing our athletes and families with clear, accurate, and practical advice to help them succeed. Below, we’ve debunked some of the most common myths we encounter.
Myth #1: "If I’m good enough, coaches will find me."
Reality: While talent is a key factor, college coaches are inundated with hundreds — if not thousands — of athletes every year. Simply being "good enough" isn't enough to catch a coach's eye. You need to be proactive in promoting yourself.
-
Take Action Now: Start by creating a standout recruiting video and a detailed player resume.
-
Connect with Coaches: Reach out to coaches and start building relationships. Our Recruiting Coordinator can help you with that!

Myth #2: "Division I is the only path to success in college volleyball."
Reality: College volleyball is played at multiple levels, including NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA. The best fit for you doesn’t always mean Division I.
-
Explore All Your Options: Understand that Division II, III, and NAIA can provide excellent opportunities for athletes to thrive both on the court and in the classroom.
-
Schedule a Recruiting Consultation: Our Recruiting Coordinator can help guide you toward programs that align with your athletic and academic goals.
Myth #3: "If I’m not starting now, I won’t get recruited."
Reality: College coaches aren’t just looking for players who start every game — they’re looking for athletes with potential, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to improve. Many players get recruited despite not being starters on their high school or club teams.
-
Focus on Your Development: Keep working hard and improving. College coaches appreciate athletes who have upside and show growth potential.

-
Reach Out to Multiple Schools: Research programs at a variety of schools and divisions. Don't limit yourself!

Myth #6: "I don’t need to worry about academics because I’m a great athlete."
Reality: Academic performance is critical in the recruiting process. Most schools have strict academic requirements for their athletes, and many offer scholarships that are based on both athletic and academic performance.
-
Focus on Academics: College coaches will look at your GPA, test scores, and academic achievements. A strong academic record increases your chances of being recruited and earning scholarships.

Myth #7: "The recruiting process is the same for every sport."
Reality: Recruiting for volleyball is unique and has specific timelines, rules, and strategies. The recruiting process for volleyball can be competitive and requires knowledge of NCAA, NAIA, and other eligibility requirements.
-
Understand the Specifics: Volleyball recruiting has different rules and timelines compared to other sports. It's essential to know when to reach out and how to get noticed by coaches.
